VALENTINE’S DAY CRAFTS

Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – celebrating the day of love with Valentine’s Day crafts.

Valentine’s Day falls on the feast day of two Christian martyrs named Valentine, but it is believed that the celebration came from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia and honoured Juno, the Roman goddess of women and marriage, and Pan, the god of nature.

While it is often considered the day to celebrate lovers, it’s the perfect time to celebrate all those you love – family and friends.

This week’s projects include a no-sew (I avoid sewing whenever possible) love bug hand puppet and a challenge.

LET’S START WITH THE CHALLENGE

I often play this game with my art students as it gets their creativity flowing once I have given them a few ideas.

SUPPLIES

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Heart shaped cookie cutters (different sizes are good, or you can make freehand hearts or buy pre-cut hearts.
  • Scissors
  • Heart stickers and foam shapes (optional)
  • Glue

METHOD

  • Start with a bunch of paper hearts, different sizes and colours.
  • Arrange and glue them to make various pictures and have the participants copy what you are doing.
  • Challenge them to come up with their own ideas.

These pictures can be used as cards to give to their loved ones.

You can also make a game of seeing if they can count all the hearts in each picture.

SUPPLIES

  • Sock
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly Eyes
  • Small foam or paper hearts
  • Glue

METHOD

  • If you put the sock over your hand, so the heel is above your wrist, it is easy to find the best spot to place the pipe cleaners and eyes.
  • Attach the pipe cleaners by sticking them into the sock and folding the end that’s inside so it doesn’t pop out.
  • Glue little hearts (foam or paper) to the ends of the pipe cleaners.
  • Glue on googly eyes.
  • Too easy, and so much fun to play with.Valentine's love bug picture

How many heart critters could you come up with?
