HOW TO SPICE UP YOUR LOVE LIFE WITH STEAMED PORK DUMPLINGS

Instead of striving to be the one who ‘wears the pants’ in the family, men should be donning the apron. Why?

Because it’s sexy.

Research, commissioned by the appliance brand Sunbeam, showed women get more turned on when their male partners are whipping up a cake, or making a cup of coffee than they do when the men are using power tools.

CAKE, LOVE, AND FRIENDSHIP – A RECIPE MADE IN HEAVEN

Persian love cake picture

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the origins of Persian Love Cake, adding to its exotic appeal.

First, there are two versions – one filled with rose-scented buttercream and another using almond meal and pistachios, giving a nutty caramel flavour.

THE LOVE POTION

Then there is the story behind the cake. Some say a French woman fell so in love with a Persian prince she baked a cake filled with magical spices designed to make him return her love. Some say the woman was Persian.

What they don’t like to say is that the prince was allergic to one of the spices and died after taking just a few bites. What a sad ending – no wonder people leave that out of their description.

TWO SUPER EASY AND SENSATIONAL SUMMER SALADS

Summer salads

The heat is on in Australia and we’re dusting off the salad bowls and enjoying the fresh, crunchy vegetables of spring and summer.

It’s my favourite time of year – not just for the warmth and the sunshine, but also the fresh food.

I love the comfort foods of winter but I always feel healthier with the lightness of summer food and salad is my favourite way to eat vegetables.

Two of the all-time favourites – standards for all our family BBQs – are potato salad and my rocket/parmesan salad.

As promised in Wednesday’s 1 Astonishing Ingredient Makes Beautiful Turquoise Jewellery post, I’m sharing with you a potato recipe you can actually eat.

Welcome to Glam Grans’ Favourite Foods – part 4 – comfort and wellness

This week features two favourite grandmothers with recipes to comfort and to make you well.

Read about the old cookbook that inspired this series in Part One. Part Two featured my Mum’s Yummy Chicken and Part Three included a delicious recipe for Peach Cakes.

FAVOURITE FOODS – COMFORT AND WELLNESS

COMFORT

The comfort food is my dear friend Kris’s recipe for rice pudding.

Rice pudding is an ancient dish cooked by many cultures throughout the world.

It has long been associated with good nutrition and easy digestion, thought to be most helpful for the sick and the elderly, as well as children.

FAVOURITE FOODS - PEACH CAKES PICTURE

This is part three in my Favourite Foods Series. You can read what inspired this in Part One, here, and my Mum’s Yummy Chicken recipe in Part Two, here.

This week’s favourite Glam Gran is my mother in law who celebrated her 85th birthday earlier this year.

MIL (mother in law) was always the go-to person in the family for cakes and cookies.

Born in Maryborough, QLD, as one of four children, MIL was the first married woman in Australia to be offered work at the Commonwealth Bank.

MIL was working at the bank in 1950 when she met the man she would marry. (They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in February).

She was so highly regarded by her employers they were prepared to break their long-standing policy not to hire married women in order to keep her when she accepted my father in law’s proposal.

FAVOURITE FOODS- MUMS YUMMY CHICKEN PICTURE

MaGra’s Rosemary Chicken with Russian potatoes and green beans

The most obvious favourite grandmother to start this favourite foods series with is my own mother, who turned 85 this year.

I remember when I was growing up that Mum always cooked kind of exotic food compared to what all my friends used to get.

I think it had a lot to do with the fact we had migrated to Australia from the USA when I was four so were very comfortable with things like Mexican food while in Australia, at the time, the biggest influence when it came to cooking seemed to come from England.

A Sunday lunchtime roast was all the rage in my friends’ homes while I was growing up. Forget that it was 40 degrees in the middle of summer.

Of course, things in this country have changed so much since then. We have some of the world’s best chefs in this country, representing food from all over the world.

Our favourite shows include cooking shows that demonstrate how we can have exotic restaurant style meals at home.

FAVOURITE FOODS – the old cook book

Welcome to Glam Grans’ Favourite Foods –Part 1

Fancy some ox eyes or some scotch woodcock? How about some wet devil? Did you know Petit Toe Pie is actually pigs’ feet pie?

Each Friday this month I plan to feature a favourite gran’s special dish in honour of Grandparents Day (to be celebrated in NSW on October 25).

I’m kicking off the series with a book review of an old cookery book given to me by my mother in law when I asked her to participate in this project.

The book is W.M.U Cookery Book, and it has an interesting history.

CRAZY CAKES

Thanks for checking out this section of Gleeful Grandiva. It seems everyone is into the foodie thing these days so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon here at YUM!

I do not consider myself a serious cook. I am however a serious eater.
From time to time I will post favourite recipes here as well as links to awesome food sites, unusual ideas and foodie reviews.

I have kind of become the cake maker of the family. I’ve made all the birthday cakes for the three-year-old goddess and this year made a cake for the two-year-old and my 85-year-old Mum. Keep reading for the recipe for Super Yummy White Chocolate Mud Cake, which is what I made for Mum.
I didn’t make Hubby’s this year as we celebrated in a restaurant and I was too embarrassed at my very home-made style to show it off in public. Having said that I’m bravely and insanely sharing these pictures with you and the web world (as opposed to the maybe 15 people who would have been in the restaurant and seen Hubby’s cake).
These are some of my favourites over the last few years.

This one for Goddess’s first birthday. Upsy Daisy turned out nearly as big as the birthday girl. We had leftover cake in the freezer for months! Clearly, I didn’t follow a plan or recipe, just had the little doll sitting on the kitchen bench to inspire me.
