creativity picture

Did you know that the same chemicals that are released during sex and eating are released when you are engaged in a creative activity?

The reward centre in your brain releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine when you do something pleasurable.

Dopamine acts as a natural anti-depressant, which means getting creative can bring you more joy and lessen anxiety.

GRAND GRATITUDE – HOW TO KEEP THE FEELING ALIVE

grand gratitude picture

One of the greatest gifts of grandparenting is to see and appreciate the wisdom in the children around us.

Often, as parents, we are so busy doing all that needs to be done, we can overlook the lessons our children offer us.

With more time for focus and contemplation, grandparents are rewarded with the vision that children come to us with all the wisdom we humans need for happy living. They help us relearn what we have forgotten.

They remind us how to play, they reunite us with our imaginations, and they help us focus on a mere moment in time.

Just when you think you have life worked out, you become a grandparent and things get complicated again.

Notwithstanding the exquisite joy that grandchildren deliver, there are quite a few challenges when adjusting to the role of Grand Parent.

A whole new group of people enter your life, in the form of in-laws (and often their friends and extended families). Prior to the arrival of the tiny treasure that is your grandchild, you may not have had to deal with this other group much.

However, once the child is born there will be occasions (such as birthday parties) you will need to interact and your diplomatic skills have never been so important.

HOW TO USE NATURE TO MAKE KIDS THRIVE

make kids thrive picture

While technology is speeding ahead at breakneck speed, the human race is going backwards in some respects.

Think about it. The open spaces and natural foods and hobbies our ancestors enjoyed have been replaced with solid walls, preservative filled foods and hobbies that often include sitting in front of some kind of screen.

Sure, our lives are more comfortable. We are living longer and I daresay with less physical pain than our ancestors endured.

However, the incidence of mental health problems such as depression is skyrocketing, as are physical health issues such as obesity. And many of us are out of touch with the world that hosts us.

The very need to write an article about reconnecting kids with nature shows just how far we have slumped.

It’s not all bad news, though.

grand designs picture

Just when you think it is safe to reclaim your home, along come the grandkids.

It’s not always easy for us grandparents, who have not had to think about safety locks on cupboards, or the dangers of low-lying glass ornaments, for years.

We may have been revelling in the enjoyment of being able to put things where we want to without these concerns. Not to mention the absolute joy of a house that stays clean for longer than 24 hours.

It can be easy to overlook the dangers, to our property and tiny hands and feet, of carelessly placed treasures.

The thing about grandkids is that they come to you having learned a different set of rules.
