Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – easy Father’s Day gifts to make.

For us here in Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on Sunday, September 4. I know my American readers have already celebrated this one in June, but if you like these crafts, why not bookmark them for next year?

This week’s projects are for some easy little boxes (I even provide a template) and a child’s drawing candle holder.

FATHER’S DAY CRAFTS

LITTLE BOXES SPELL DAD

These little boxes spell out the word ‘Dad’ and act as mini photo displays as well. They would be perfect to store little things on a desk, such as rubber bands and paper clips. We’re going to fill ours with tiny chocolates – can’t go wrong with that, can you?

MATERIALS

• Cardboard – I used the card from the back of used A4 notebooks as it seemed like a good way to recycle and the cardboard is strong enough to form the boxes without being too difficult to cut.
• Box template – get yours here.
• Scissors
• Glue
• Paint
• 12 pictures of your favourite little ones – I sized mine to 4 cm x 4 cm
• Coloured paper – scrapbooking is good as the patterns are interesting and it’s stronger than printing paper.
• 3 kid’s drawings – these are for the box lids so they need to be small. The box lids are 6 cm x 6 cm. The eight-month-old Goddess was obviously not old enough to do a drawing so I placed her perfect little thumbs in some paint and made a thumbprint picture. Thinking outside the box, right?
• Letter stencils – these make it easy to get the letters for ‘dad’ perfect.
• Printer

METHOD

• Print and cut out the box template (you can get it here if you haven’t grabbed it yet).
• Place it on top of your cardboard and trace around it.

• Cut out the box shape.
• Fold on the dotted lines indicated on the template.
• Repeat until you have three boxes.
• Unfold and paint both sides of each box and allow to dry.
• Refold the boxes, placing glue on the tabs.
• You can hold them together while drying with a rubber band if desired. NOTE: At this point, you may notice the cardboard showing through at the folds. I kind of liked the look so left it, but you could use ribbon or coloured tape to hide this if you want.
• While the glue is drying, use the letter stencil to trace out two Ds and one A on the scrapbook paper, and then cut them out.
• Carefully glue them to the fronts of your little boxes.
• Glue your photos on the other sides and under the box lid.
• Glue the drawings to the top of your boxes.
• Cover all the pictures with clear drying glue to protect them.
• Fill the boxes with whatever goodies you want.

CHILD’S DRAWING CANDLE HOLDER

This is a sweet way to display your child’s artistic talents and so easy you won’t believe it.

MATERIALS

• Glass jar
• Double-sided tape
• Baking paper
• Assorted markers
• Tea light candle
• Tiny artist

METHOD

• Cut the paper so that it fits around the glass with just a little overlap.
• Get your clever artists to do their thing

• Wrap the paper around the glass and secure with double-sided tape.
• Place the candle inside the jar and light (or turn on if using a battery tea light)
• Enjoy the art.
