How can you train it if you haven’t made it?

I have been a dragon lover for decades.

I love the mystery and magic that surrounds them and the way they open up the imagination. Read my post The Truth About Believing in Myths.

When something hasn’t been seen it allows our minds to paint our own pictures of how they look.

For several years I ran my own business making and selling pottery – mostly dragons.

More recently I was asked to get my art students involved in making a dragon float for an event they had planned.

It was quite a challenge as I only had two weeks to do this. We designed a giant cardboard dragon that at least 10 people could fit inside, holding the sides of the dragon’s body as they ran in a ‘funathon’ race.

The projects I’m offering today are much simpler than these.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR DRAGON

PAPER PLATE DRAGON

MATERIALS

• Paper plate
• Scissors
• Glue
• Paint
• Googly eye

METHOD

• Cut the plate in half.
• Cut a wavy line along the straight edge of one plate half to form the wings.
• Leaving the curved edge of the second plate half intact, and cutting from the straight edge, cut out the dragon’s head, body and tail – you will need to cut into the curved edge at the end of the tail to help form the point.

• Glue the wings, curved edge towards the dragon’s head, into the middle of the body. You can use paper clips to hold it all together while the glue is drying.
• Let your imagination have full reign with paint colours.
• Glue on a googly eye.

FIRE BREATHING DRAGON

MATERIALS

• Cardboard roll
• Yellow, red and orange crepe paper and cellophane
• Glue
• Paint
• 4 x pom poms
• 2x googly eyes

METHOD

• Paint the roll in the desired colour.
• Cut the paper into strips and glue into one end of the roll.
• Glue on pom poms at the other end of the roll, on the top.
• Attach the googly eyes onto the pom poms with glue.
• Glue extra pom poms on the other end of the roll, near the paper strips.

When dry your child can blow through the hole at one end to make the paper move so it looks like the dragon is breathing fire.
