It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s Superman. He was, after all, an alien. Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project, fun space crafts to celebrate World UFO Day.
Have you ever seen an unidentified flying object?
Some people celebrate World UFO day on June 24, the date that aviator Kenneth Arnold reported what is considered to be the first widely reported unidentified flying object sighting in the United States.
Others celebrate it on July 2, which commemorates the supposed UFO crash in the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident.
The goal of the day is to raise awareness of the existence of UFOs and to encourage governments to declassify their files on sightings.
From a Wacky point of view, it’s just a great excuse to make some fun crafts.
CRAFTS TO CELEBRATE WORLD UFO DAY –
PAPER PLATE FLYING SAUCER
A paper plate, a bit of paint, some sticky gems and a plastic lid are all you need to make this cute flying saucer.
METHOD
- Have your child paint the bottom of the plate whatever colour they choose.
- Depending on the plastic lid you choose to use, they can paint this too. We used a clear lid but many come already coloured. Lids from spray paint bottles work well.
- Once the paint is dry, it’s just a matter of sticking the gems on to represent lights.
If you choose a not-too-heavy lid, you can throw the plate like a Frisbee and really make your flying saucer fly.

CARDBOARD ROLL ROCKET
MATERIALS
- Cardboard roll
- Paper
- White cardboard
- Red or orange crepe paper
METHOD
- Cover the roll with paper. We used white so the students could colour it themselves, but any colour will do.
- Use box cutters to make a hole for the ‘seat’ in the middle of the side of the roll.
- Cut a simple wing design from the white cardboard and glue the roll to that.
- Let the lets colour and decorate the wings and roll
- Glue or sticky tape crepe paper strips into the end of the roll.
Twisted foil is a wonderful material for sculpting cute little aliens.
