HOW TO USE NATURE TO MAKE KIDS THRIVE

make kids thrive picture

While technology is speeding ahead at breakneck speed, the human race is going backwards in some respects.

Think about it. The open spaces and natural foods and hobbies our ancestors enjoyed have been replaced with solid walls, preservative filled foods and hobbies that often include sitting in front of some kind of screen.

Sure, our lives are more comfortable. We are living longer and I daresay with less physical pain than our ancestors endured.

However, the incidence of mental health problems such as depression is skyrocketing, as are physical health issues such as obesity. And many of us are out of touch with the world that hosts us.

The very need to write an article about reconnecting kids with nature shows just how far we have slumped.

It’s not all bad news, though.

HOW TO SPOT NATURE’S HIDDEN TREASURES

Ever missed something that was right under your nose? The answer has to be yes because all around us, magical, secret things are happening – right under our noses – and we fail to see them.

We might think we take the time to stop and smell the roses, but how often do we silently watch a patch of grass or earth, a portion of bark on a tree, the fluttering of petals on a flower, for more than a few seconds?

Often the magic unfolds only after patient, silent, and focused watching. That is when you will find nature’s hidden treasures.

There are so many worlds within worlds around us and when we take the time to see them our own world opens into endless possibilities of creativity, peace, and harmony.

TALK TO THE TREES – THEY JUST MIGHT ANSWER!

trees picture

Clint Eastwood believed they were not listening when he ‘talked to the trees’ (Paint Your Wagon) but he may have been wrong.

French scientists have discovered trees do talk – well, at least they make noises when they are running out of water.

The scientists at Grenoble University, France, used slivers of dead pine trees soaked in a gel to simulate a living tree, then created an artificially dry environment and listened to the noises which are ultrasonic pops, 100 times faster than what a human ear can hear.

When a tree is trying to suck moisture out of dry ground, tiny air bubbles are formed and the majority of sounds recorded during the research came from these bubbles.

Imagine what else we could discover about tree noises as our scientists, aided by advances in technology, work to uncover more secrets.

This is just a hint that is the magic of trees.

SAVING LIVES – WHICH ONE WILL MAKE YOU A HERO?

I saved a life the other day.

I was pretty proud of myself as I had risked getting hurt in the process.

I told Hubby how I had saved a life and his response was; “do tell’.

Clearly, I hadn’t been featured on the news as a hero and Hubby (I could tell by the tone of his voice) was expecting something ridiculous.

7 REASONS YOU NEED TO BE GARDENING WITH KIDS

Hi, and welcome to another Wacky Wednesday project – this week it’s gardening with kids.

GARDENING WITH KIDS CAN BE SIMPLE AND CHEAP

Gardening with kids is an easy activity that has so many benefits – for you and the kids.

It doesn’t have to be complicated and difficult. In fact, keeping it simple is the big secret to success.

Gardening with kids doesn’t even require a lot of space. A small pot on the balcony is enough to teach the kids some really important things.

The minimum requirements are something to contain the plants, some soil, and some seeds.

If you want to get a bit more serious about gardening with kids then it’s really good to have child-sized gardening tools and gloves for them to use.

Start by deciding what container to use – it could be a pot, or you could use a larger container. Four-year-old Goddess’s garden is in an old laundry tub while three-year-old Goddess’s garden is in a small recycling crate, but both started with single pots.
