Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – fantastic flowers you can make for Mother’s Day.

 The tradition of giving gifts, including flowers, on Mother’s Day began in the early 19^th century in America.

Some believe flowers became a preferred gift as the day coincided with America’s spring when all the beautiful flowers are out.

One of the most traditional flowers to give is the carnation, which represents love and gratitude.

In Australia, Mother’s Day falls in autumn and the chrysanthemum is the favoured flower to give, mainly because it’s in season.

Kids love that the name contains the word ‘mum’ and the flower represents cheerfulness.

There are around 600,000 known flowering plants in the world. Do know what your favourite flower symbolizes?

FANTASTIC FLOWERS – THE HYACINTH

I really love these bulbous blooms that smell so sweet and surprise me every spring when they break through the soil with the promise of more beauty.

These ones won’t give you that delicious smell but they sure are pretty.

MATERIALS

• Coloured paper. Hyacinths come in a range of colours including white, orange, pink and my favourites, purple and lavender.
• Green paper – I used crepe paper for the stem and construction paper for the leaves.
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Wooden chopstick
• Glue

METHOD

• Fold the paper in half, long end to long end and cut along the fold.
• Cut strips along the long end of one of the halves up to 2 cm before the top edge.
• Use a pencil to tightly roll the strips up and make them curly.

• Place glue along the wooden chopstick and then wind green paper all the way along.
• Add some glue to one end of the flower and tightly twist it around the stick with the curly bits facing up and out.
• Keep twisting it, tightly, so that it overlaps itself along the stem.
• Secure the end with glue.
• Cut some leaf shapes from green paper and glue them to the stem.

FANTASTIC FLOWERS – THE DAISY

MATERIALS

• Large button
• Wire
• Paper – various colours and green
• Wooden chopstick
• Glue
• Scissors

METHOD

• Thread the wire through the button and set aside.
• Cut the coloured paper and then the strips as per the hyacinth.
• Roll the paper tightly, short end to short end and secure with glue.
• Thread the button through the hole from the top and then twist the bottom of the paper tightly around the wire.
• Bend the wire up and around the base of the flower.
• Use a pencil to curl the petal strips out and down towards the stem.
• Cut leaf shapes from the green paper and secure with glue over the wire.
• Prepare a stem as per the hyacinth and secure the flower to the top, winding and glueing more green around the join to secure it.

FANTASTIC FLOWERS – THE ROSE BUD

MATERIALS

• Coloured paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Wooden chopstick
• Green paper
• Glue

METHOD

• Draw a big spiral on the paper, allowing it to go off the paper.
• Cut out the spiral.
• Starting from the middle of the spiral, starting wrapping the spiral tightly around itself.
• Secure with glue or tape.
• Prepare the stem and attach the flower as for the daisy.

BONUS CARD PROJECT

Why not give Mum a cute flower card to go with the bouquet?

This card is super easy.

• Just fold a piece of paper so it is overlapping about six times.
• Cut a small heart shape from the paper to create six small hearts.
• Fold each heart in half.
• Glue one half of one flower to one half of another.
• Continue glueing the heart halves together until you are left with just two halves.
• Glue these to some coloured paper.
• Cut a small stem and leaf shape from green paper and glue this below the heart flower.
• Glue the whole thing to the front of a cardboard card. Easy peasy.
