Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – Glamgorgious Easter eggs.

It seems the Easter bunnies are arriving in shops earlier each year. I barely had time to recover from Christmas when they started appearing in the supermarkets.

Like all the big holidays, Easter has become a profit-driven bonanza for retailers, putting a dent in the budgets of many households.

With my own family growing at almost breakneck speed, the challenge is to find fun and affordable ways to give gifts, without breaking the budget and buying an overload of chocolate that none of us needs.

This has been something I’ve strived for since having my own kids, decades ago.

GLAMGORGIOUS EASTER EGGS

One year I decided to make ‘glamgorgious’ eggs which are containers to hold smaller, chocolate eggs – or anything else you choose to give at Easter.

I figured if I made them really special, I could be forgiven for not forking out heaps on the giant Easter egg packs that have become so popular. I wanted them to be keepsakes so I matched the decorations to the receiver – little charms such as a skateboard for the skateboarder of the family, bits of toys that had special meaning and so on.

You don’t need a lot of materials for this project, so it’s easy to keep it cheap but it does take a little time, so start early.

LET’S GET STARTED

SUPPLIES

• Newspaper
• Masking tape
• Plastic wrap
• Paper mache paste – get the recipe here
• Box cutters
• Marker
• Paint
• Glue
• Decorations

METHOD

• Scrunch a few sheets of newspaper into an egg shape and secure with masking tape. NB: You could use a balloon but you may need to inflate it too large to get a good egg shape and the newspaper way is just as easy.

• Cover the egg with plastic wrap.
• Make up the wallpaper paste as per directions.
• Tear newspaper into thin strips – the smaller the strips, the stronger the paper mache egg will be.
• Coat the newspaper strips in the paste and wrap around the egg – first horizontally, then vertically.
• After 3-4 layers you need to stop and let the glue dry really well. In warm weather, this should only take a day but in the colder climates, longer – try putting it near a heat source.

• Once it is dry, continue with the wrapping, alternating the direction of each new layer.
• The more layers you add, the stronger the end result will be – I recommend between 15 and 20 layers. You will know when it is strong enough because it will not dent at all when you push inwards on the egg really hard.
• Mark a zigzag line across the middle of the egg with the marker.
• Use the box cutters to cut through the egg along this line until to have two pieces.
• Remove the original plastic wrapped egg and discard (or use to make another glamgorgious egg).
• Paint your egg the desired colour. You could paint designs on it if you choose.
• Decorate with buttons, gemstones, beads, charms and whatever else you think would be appreciated.

• Fill with whatever you like.
