Welcome to another Wacky Wednesday project – recipes for food fit for fairies.
Actually, this food is also fit for pirates, robots, princesses, dragons – whatever theme for a party you come up with.
Have you ever noticed how everyone loves the end bits when it comes to sausage rolls? My easy recipe will show you how to make every bite an end bit. The other recipes include delicious white chocolate and macadamia cookies, mini quiches and an all-time Aussie favourite – fairy bread.
Let’s start with the sausage rolls. I keep being asked to make these for everyone’s parties these days. People often think I have done something really special. The fact is, I just use fat sausages and ready-rolled puff pastry. But I do have a secret.
FOOD FIT FOR FAIRIES – SAUSAGE ROLLS
- Thick sausages – I used 1 kg and made a huge amount and froze some for later. They can stay in the freezer for several months.
- Ready-made puff pastry sheets – I used about six sheets for 1 kg of sausages.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C.
- Remove the sausage mince from the casing and squeeze thin lines of sausage along the top and bottom edges of the puff pastry sheet, as well as one thin line of sausage in the middle of the sheet.
- Gently roll the pastry over the sausage mince at the top and bottom of the sheet, press down firmly and cut along the join.
- Roll the pastry around the remaining line of sausage mice and press the pastry edges together firmly.
- Cut the sausage rolls into bite-size pieces.
- Place the pieces on an oven tray lined with baking paper so that there are a few centimetres between each piece. This is the secret that makes each piece an end piece. If you place the cut rolls in a line all together, the middle pieces are less crunchy.
- Brush a tiny amount of milk on each little roll and place in the oven for 20 minutes.
- Done. Too easy and so yummy. Serve with tomato sauce.
FOOD FIT FOR FAIRIES – WHITE CHOCOLATE AND MACADAMIA COOKIES
These are crazy delicious and the recipe makes a good batch – about 40 cookies, depending on the size of the cookie cutter you use.
The beauty of having to cut these out is that you can make them fit any theme. I made stars for the fairy party, I also make stars at Christmas, bunnies at Easter and hearts on Valentine’s Day, or just because.
- 250g softened butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2tsp vanilla extract
- 1 egg yolk – save the white for the mini quiches
- 21/4 cups plain flour
- ¼ cup chopped macadamias
- ½ cup white chocolate pieces
NOTE: I always end up adding extra nuts and chocolate and it doesn’t spoil the recipe.
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
- Place butter and sugar in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.
- Add the vanilla and egg yolk and beat to combine.
- Beat in the flour until smooth dough forms.
- Stir in the macadamias and chocolate.
- Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes – or until firm.
- Roll out the dough between two pieces of baking paper.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. NOTE: The kids love helping to do this step. Read my post, 10 Reasons You Need to Cook with Your Kids.
- Place on oven trays lined with baking paper and bake for 15 – 18 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Cool on wire racks and try not to overindulge.
FOOD FIT FOR FAIRIES – MINI QUICHES
Another party favourite, these are easy to make and add a bit of nutrition to the party fare.
- Puff pastry sheets
- 3-4 eggs
- 1 x onion, finely chopped
- 1 x red capsicum, finely chopped
- Salami/ham/bacon/chicken or any other meat of your choice.
- 1 ½ cups grated cheese – tasty is good, but you could use a blend using mozzarella. Even adding feta is yummy.
- ½ cup milk
- Dried herbs
- Salt and pepper
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
- Cut the pastry into squares – I usually go for 6-9 per sheet, depending on the size of the muffin tin I use.
- Spray the muffin tins with vegetable oil.
- Place a pastry square in each muffin tray hole and gently press into the holes.
- Beat the eggs and milk with a fork.
- Add all the other ingredients and mix together.
- Spoon the mix into the pastry cases.
- Cook in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the top of each quiche is firm.
- Cool slightly, then place each quiche onto a wire rack and return to the oven for 10 minutes – so that the bottom of the pastry is crisp and firm.
These are yummy to eat cold or warm.
FOOD FIT FOR FAIRIES – MAGICAL WAND FRUIT STICKS
A lovely, healthy addition to any party.
I used a small star-shaped cookie cutter to make pineapple stars.
Thread a selection of berries and fruit cubes onto bamboo skewers and top with a pineapple star.
FOOD FIT FOR FAIRIES – FAIRY BREAD
This one has absolutely no health benefits but is oh so pretty and the kids love it.
- White bread slices
- Butter or margarine
- Butter each slice of bread.
- Cover with sprinkles.
- Cut into triangles.
Done. Too easy.
