Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – fun Easter chicks and eggs to make.

I may not be able to answer that age old question, what came first – the chicken or the egg? But I can tell you that the decoration of eggs for Easter is believed to date back to the 13th century.

According to some, decorating eggs was a celebration of the end of the Lent period (the 40 days before Easter) when fasting meant certain foods, such as milk and eggs, were not consumed.

In some countries, such as Romania and Hungary, wooden eggs were painted with beautiful and elaborate patterns that helped to tell the story of Easter.

Russian rulers enjoyed the beauty of intricately designed eggs made by jeweller Carl Faberge.

These exquisite creations were made from precious materials such as silver, gold and gems.

The Wacky Workshops eggs are not quite so precious, made from recyclables and paper, but they are cute and easy for kids to make.

4 FUN EASTER CHICKS AND EGGS TO MAKE – THE PAPER HATCHLING

MATERIALS

  • Paper – various colours
  • Scissors
  • Pushpins
  • Glue

METHOD

  • Cut some egg shapes from the coloured paper.
  • Cut each egg in half in a zigzag pattern.
  • Add a pushpin to the bottom half of the egg in the top left-hand corner.
  • Connect the top part of the egg to this by pushing the pin through the bottom left-hand corner.
  • Draw and cut out a simple chicken shape.
  • Glue the bottom part of the chick to the back of the bottom part of the egg, so that just its neck and face are visible at the front of the egg.

Now the egg can close and open to reveal the chick inside.

You could add some double-sided tape (or glue) to the back of the bottom part of the egg to attach it to a homemade card.

  • Glue

METHOD

  • Cut the feathers to they are in proportion to the lid size.

  • Glue another lid on top so that the open sides of both lids are facing inwards.
  • Repeat with the other lids, adding the feathers to one section first.
  • Place glue on the rim side of one of the double lids, opposite the feathers and string (these will be at the top of the head).
  • Glue the other double lids to it, with the feathers on the right side – to represent the tail.
