CRAFTING A HAPPY LIFE – WHY KIDS NEED (AND LOVE) TO CREATE

crafting a happy life picture

They file into the studio and choose their seats.

They are the latest Wacky Workshops students (aged five to 12) and they’re drawing a picture of their favourite toy.

This was the first activity in a toy making workshop. A way to keep them busy and get into a creative groove while waiting for the others to arrive.

Almost all of the students drew iPads on their sheets and began to talk to each other about their favourite games. The perfect icebreaker.

Friendships were made. The conversation was enthusiastic and joyful.

They discussed the challenges of getting through complicated stages in a game they all knew and loved.

I wondered how today’s activities would stack up against the lure of technology.

It was more curiosity than concern. I’ve never had an unhappy student.

I also knew that during that three-hour workshop, amazing things would be happening inside their brains. Things that don’t happen while in front of a screen.

When you come across a cardboard box, what do you see?

For many, the answer will be a box. Others will see a container in which to store things.

For crafters, the answer is possibilities.

Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – making dreamcatchers.

OK, so I’m not going to guarantee they will stop nightmares, but that is the legend behind them.

Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe people of North America.

Legend has it the Spider Woman, Asibikaashi, took care of the people, especially the children, of the land.

THIS IS THE EASIEST DOLL YOU’LL EVER MAKE

Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – making woollen dolls.

With the weather getting cooler here in Australia our minds turn to all things warm and wool is one of the best of them.

Every year, inspired by the cooler temperatures, I vow I’m going to start, or finish, a knitted scarf or blanket.  Last year I managed about five small knitted squares – only 50 left to go – yay!

Obviously, knitting isn’t really my thing but I can happily make dozens of these cute little dolls and they are so easy even the Goddesses can make them.

HOW TO MAKE A NO SEW HEART PILLOW

Welcome to another Wacky Workshops project – a no-sew heart pillow.

HEART PILLOW PICTURE

Funny how decorative pillow prices can range from a few dollars to $20 or $30. You can sometimes find the little square ones in the cheap shops for $5 and I’ve even snapped up some bargain pillows for $2 each.

Yet, when I looked for a heart-shaped pillow recently, I couldn’t find anything less than $20.

As I already had a specific material I wanted to cover it in, I wasn’t prepared to spend this so decided to convert one of the square pillows I already had.

I’m not a fan of sewing so try to avoid it whenever possible, which is why I came up with the no-sew heart pillow.

Do you have a bunch of old left over gift ribbon pieces you don’t know what to do with? In my pre- Christmas post How to Win by Avoiding the Bin I actually told readers to keep these scraps. Those who took my advice could be cursing me now for a big tangled mess of ribbon scraps – too short to reuse on a gift.

Well, I have the answer. Two beautiful little ribbon fairies.

These colourful little fairies are sure to win any little girl’s heart.

HOW TO MAKE BUTTON BRACELETS

Welcome to another Wacky Wednesday project – button bracelets

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but costume jewellery is a winner when you spend a lot of time around young children.

My little granddaughters are always wanting to try on whatever bit of bling I’m wearing – whether it’s a priceless heirloom (I don’t actually have any of those, but I do have some sentimental pieces) or a bracelet made of plastic beads.

When I was a newer grandmother I obediently handed over a bangle to my then one-year-old Goddess which was immediately dropped through the spaces in our deck flooring.

There’s no way to get under that deck so that bracelet will only see daylight again when the house is pulled down and the deck ripped up.

MAKE A FLOWER PEN PROJECT

HOW TO MAKE A PRETTY FLOWER PEN

Welcome to another Wacky Wednesday project.

I love flower pens. It’s hard to be unhappy when you’re writing with something so pretty and they are loads of fun to make. I saw one in a shop years ago and figured I could do that and I have many times. It has always been a big hit during my classes as well.

So I figured it would be a must to make these for the flower themed birthday party I was hosting. Then I decided to incorporate them in a lolly bag with a difference. Stay tuned and I’ll tell all.
